This course is designed for students who want to improve their lactation skills, or become International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. This is the first course in a three-course series, and it covers the first 40 hrs of the 100 hrs of lactation education offered through the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health. After completion of the 100 hrs of Lactation Education, students are eligible to apply for the PSU Pathway 2 Lactation Practicum.

This course will cover breastfeeding promotion, support, and protection. The primary focus will be on counseling the breastfeeding family during the normal course of breastfeeding. Maternal and infant anatomy will be reviewed, along with normal infant development. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about how to help families deal with common breastfeeding challenges.

The PSU Lactation Education courses are all hybrid courses, requiring some in-person classes and some distance learning webinars. Each term you will attend one in-person weekend of classes (Friday evening through Sunday early afternoon), followed by seven weekly distance learning webinars offered on Mondays from 10-1:15. You must attend at least 75% of the in-person classes, and at least four of the webinars during the live presentation. All webinars are recorded, so you can view the remaining three webinars as a recorded session.

To be eligible to take this course, students must have completed the IBLCE Health Sciences Education requirements or be IBLCE Recognized Health Professionals.
