COURSE DESCRIPTION
This conference will present the most current lactation research and practice issues for health professionals. Information obtained can be used to promote and support breastfeeding in any clinical situation.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
• State five specific hospital maternity practices found to significantly extend breastfeeding duration among mothers of healthy, full-term infants.
• Identify effective strategies to implement supportive maternity practices and empower expectant and new mothers to request hospital practices that improve long- term breastfeeding success.
• Recognize unique vulnerabilities in late-preterm infants that increase the risk of medical complications and affect the initiation and the success of breastfeeding.
• Develop a collaborative plan for successful initiation and continuation of breastfeeding in late-preterm infants.
• Recognize the physical findings associated with ankyloglossia in newborns and identify three problems associated with tongue tie. Understand the risks, benefits, and indications of frenotomy.
• Discuss the top reasons women cite for discontinuing breastfeeding; provide anticipatory guidance to prevent the lactation problems that lead to early weaning.
• Offer breastfeeding women specific strategies to maintain a plentiful milk supply throughout the baby’s first year.
• Promote professional leadership skills to enhance personal satisfaction, prevent career burnout, and improve client counseling concerning life balance changes to accommodate breastfeeding.
• Implement specific stress reduction strategies to increase happiness and fulfillment, enhance productivity, align priorities and values, and practice self-care.
