Pamela K. Murphy is a lactation consultant in an advanced practice lactation service model at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Medical Center and Children's Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. She has worked with birthing and breastfeeding families for more than ten years. In her current lactation practice, she attends to women and their healthy, high-risk or premature newborns. She also works with mothers in the outpatient setting who have issues such as: undersupply, nipple candida and ineffective latch. Her research areas include: accurate test weighing techniques, and vitamin D insufficiency correlations with mental health. Her published works have appeared in Breastfeeding Medicine and the Journal of Nurse Midwifery & Women's Health.
Pamela is involved in breastfeeding education for nurses, nursing and medical students, residents and WIC peer counselors. She recently collaborated with her colleagues to develop a training program focused on breastfeeding basics and initiating early pumping to provide colostrum to high-risk and preterm infants. Her commitment to breastfeeding is demonstrated by her certification as an internationally board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and the development of www.breastfeedingconferences.com; a free search engine for lactation consultants and nurses to post and locate breastfeeding continuing education opportunities.
